Calexico, the Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers
January 11 at the Knitting Factory
BY WAYNE LEWIS

Joey Burns did time backing erudite Inland Empire institution (and sometime New Times contributor) Franklin Bruno in Nothing Painted Blue before finding his creative soul mate, drummer John Convertino, as part of Tucson oddball country-rock crew Giant Sand. Together, Burns and Convertino have provided rhythm and arrangement touches for many projects, including Devotion + Doubt, a monster of a record by sullen songwriter Richard Buckner. But even given their impressive curriculum vitae, these guys have really hit their stride as the main men of Calexico. The band trades in a mutant roots music that is atmospheric, organic and traditional. Reverb-drenched guitar songs recombine elements of surf, spaghetti Western and mariachi music as ringing vibraphones, mournful trumpets and ghostly pedal steel set the mood.

The Knitting Factory bill is further sweetened by the inclusion of Mark Olson, once the key ingredient in the Jayhawks' honeyed country-pop, now chasing a more vintage muse along with his Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers.
